MAKAR SANKRANTI 2022: People Take Dip At Gangasagar

Gangasagar Mela Began on January 8


Amid a spike in the cases of Covid-19, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti which is celebrated on January 14. People were seen taking a dip at holy Gangasagar in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal today. 


The West Bengal government is set with preparations and protocols of Covid-19. The government has set an air ambulance service for any kind of emergency during the holy dip. Also, a two-member committee has been set to monitor adherence to COVID-19 protocols during the Gangasagar Mela. The mela Began on January 8.


As per the information, Only those who have a negative RT-PCR test report for Covid-19 which should not be older than 72 hours will be permitted to enter inside the mela. 


Makar Sankranti is a festival in the Hindu calendar in which devotees make offerings to the deity Surya. The day marks the first day of the sun`s transit into the Makara, marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days. On this occasion, people prefer different varieties of dishes at different places. Some fly kites to celebrate this day also, this is celebrated with different names at other places.


The Covid cases are alarming across the country. Prime minister Narendra Modi also tweeted on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Also on Thursday, He chaired a review meeting with all the Chief Ministers of the state to curb the Covid scenario. The Covid-19 cases and the positivity rate are gradually taking an upward shift.
