Massive Protests In Jharkhand

Over Job Reservations for Locals…

On Wednesday morning, 19 April 2023, seeking 100 percent reservation for locals in government jobs, members of different student organizations protested on the streets of Jharkhand to enforce a state-wide shutdown.

Members of the Jharkhand State Students' Union (JSSU) protested in Ranchi's Morabadi area, burning properties on the road.

They asked the nearby vegetable market vendors to shut their shops.

Similar scenes like this were witnessed in the other districts as well, but normal routine remained unaffected in the early morning hours.

Many schools remained closed across the state, while the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) cancelled the examinations as well.

In the state capital, around 2,500 security personnel have been deployed in view of the mass shutdown, officials said.

The student organisations have been protesting since Monday as part of their 72-hour agitation program, demanding 100 per cent reservation for locals in government jobs.

On Tuesday evening, the protestors took out a march in Ranchi.

They had attempted to Gherao Chief Minister Hemanta Soren's residence on Monday but police stopped them.

JSSU leader Devendra Mahto said, "The government promised us 100 percent reservation in government jobs for locals but later opened the door for students from outside the state also, forcing us to call the bandh in the state."

Instead of implementing the 1932 'khatiyan' (land settlement) based recruitment scheme, it brought back an old employment policy in which only 60 percent of the seats will be reserved for underprivileged students, while 40 percent will be for all, he said.
