Mathematician CR Rao, Wins Top International Award

At the age of 102…


Mr. Calyampudi Radhakrishna, a famous Indian-American mathematician, and statistician; will receive the International Prize in Statistics 2023, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field, for his monumental work 75 years ago that revolutionized statistical thinking.

Mr. Calyampudi for the last 75 years, continues to exert an influence on science, the International Prize in Statistics Foundation said in an official statement.

Mr. Rao who is 102 years old, will receive the prize.

It will come with a USD 80,000 award, this July at the biennial International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

"In awarding this prize, we celebrate the monumental work by C R Rao that not only revolutionized statistical thinking in its time.

It also continues to exert influence on human understanding of science across a wide set of disciplines," said Guy Nason, chair of the International Prize in Statistics Foundation.

In 1945, in a paper published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society, Mr. Rao showed three fundamental results that marked the way for the modern field of stats and provided statistical tools heavily used in science, the Foundation said in a statement on April 1.
