Nationwide agitation announced by farmers on January 6

Nationwide agitation on Jan 6

It has been a week since the unsettling and uncalled violence hit the National Capital on 72nd Republic Day due to farmers protests spreading in the country against the implementation of new farm laws. The public expressed mixed views on this act by taking revolting sides. Soon after which, on Monday a section of farmers announced nationwide demonstration on February 6, standing firm on the demand for repeal of three laws. The protests have been looming over the borders of Delhi for more than two months now.

"February 6 will witness a country wide strike. Roads will be blocked from 12pm to 3pm," as reported by Balbir Singh Rajewal of Bhartiye Kisan Union to news agency ANI. The road cease is an attempt by farm unions to grab the attention of the government over their demands of repeal of laws, against the internet shutdown, roads barricading and against union budget announced on Monday. Government had ensured security provision after an eruption of violence earlier. Near protest sites, Delhi Police used Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) Buses to seal the main entry amid other multi layered security arrangements. Security has been tightened on the checkpoints.

Ghazipur has turned into a new epicenter of growing outrage, where restrictions have been strengthened on Monday as it continues to aggravate Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad commuters. The Delhi-UP border which is sheltering protesters from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, after emotional appeal from BKU leader Rakesh Tikait, has been equipped with security measures and living facilities. Farmers felt that they have been ignored in Union Budget 2021-22, declared the reduction of electricity and water supply at protest sites.

Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a body clubbing farmer unions accused that Twitter handles of Kisan Ekta Morcha and username 'Tractor2Twitter' has been blocked. While the accounts have been restricted on social media platforms in India, they have been restored by Twitter around late evening.

This announcement came in retaliation to government's amendments in the agricultural sector. During Budget speech, Sitharaman quoted that procurement of wheat, rice and pulses has been increased steadily.
