Nepalese national raped in southeast Delh

Accused held, charged under sections 376 and 506 of Indian Penal Code

On Tuesday, a Nepalese national Shweta (identity not revealed) was allegedly raped by a man in southeast Delhi’s Amar Colony area said the police on Wednesday. The Greater Kailash police station received the information about the sexual assault of a woman by someone she is well acquainted with.

While the inquiry was going on it was found that the area where the incident took place falls under the jurisdiction of Amar Colony police station. Later, the complainant and her brother accompanied the Greater Kailash police to the Amar Colony police station and made a statement.

On the basis of the lodged complaint, counselling report and the existing circumstances, a case under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code was registered said a senior police officer. The accused was taken into custody.

The police also interrogated Mayank Sharma (41) who is a resident of Noida in Uttar Pradesh. During the interrogation it was found that the complaint was in a live-in relationship from 2014-2014. The accused was arrested and further investigation is underway, the officer said.

During 2020, an estimate of 2,533 cases of rape was reported across metropolitan cities. Delhi recorded the maximum figure of 967 cases which 38% of the total cases reported. Although that comes as a surprise for it shows 28% fall in rape cases than usual. Most of the times it is committed by someone known to the victim. And as per statistics of Delhi the accused is often a local rather than an outsider.
