Amid a sudden surge in Covid cases, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday declared a night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am and also ordered a total ban on political gatherings in the state till April 30. Earlier, the night curfew was imposed in 12 districts of Punjab that has been extended to the entire state along with reduction in number of people present at weddings, funerals, cremations to 50 for indoor and 100 for outdoor events.

It is mandatory for all government employees to wear masks in offices. Earlier, the restrictions included closure of schools and educational institutions which will still remain effective till April 30. Cinema houses can run with 50 per cent capacity and entry of 10 people per shop at malls at any point has been allowed -- a slight relaxation from 100 people allowed in a mall at one time.

Captain Amarinder Singh, in his weekly review of the Covid situation, expressed concern as over 85 per cent of cases in Punjab are of the UK strain, which is more contagious and virulent. He expressed surprise at the behaviour of leaders of the opposition parties, the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Aam Aadmi Party, and said that action will be taken against anyone, including political leaders, who violate the ban on gatherings.
