Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Friday, one of the new patients in Mumbai who tested positive for the Omicron variant after returning from New York had taken three doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

 

The Mumbai civic body said, the 29-year-old man was tested for Covid-19 at the airport on November 9. His samples were sent for genome sequencing, where they confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant.

 

The BMC further added, the man had taken three doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, sold in the US. However, the Omicron variant was confirmed only after testing.

 

According to the official statement, After the test samples came, he was admitted to a hospital as a precautionary measure. The civic authorities also started tracing contact, but two of his “high-risk contacts” tested negative for Covid-19.

 

On Friday, Notably, US firm Pfizer expressed concerns that the pandemic could extend to 2024 amid reports that the rapidly spreading Omicron variant of the coronavirus was five times more likely to reinfect people than Delta.

 

Pfizer developed its Covid-19 vaccine with Germany's BioNTech SE. The companies have been developing a version of their vaccine tailored to combat the Omicron variant, but have not yet decided whether it will be needed or not.

 

Meanwhile, according to the reports, In Mumbai, Omicron patients in the country have gone up to 15, including the five outside from Mumbai.
