PM Narendra Modi to be first Indian PM to chair UNSC debate

The debate will take place at 5:30 pm via video conferencing on Monday.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi will become first Indian Prime Minister to chair a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate that will take place later today evening. The government said in a statement that PM Modi will preside over the open debate on "Enhancing Maritime Security- A Case for International Cooperation" at 5:30 pm via video conferencing on Monday.

India is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and it has acquired the rotating Presidency from France for the month of August. India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador TS Tirumurti said three high-level meetings will be held on maritime security, peacekeeping and counter terrorism. Several heads of state and government of member states will participate in the meeting, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, the debate will be broadcasted live on the official website of UNSC. The debate will mainly focus on how maritime crime and insecurity can be dealt with and will also look at ways to strengthen coordination in the maritime domain.
