Puducherry CM tested positive


Puducherry CM N Rangasamy tested Covid-19 positive and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Chennai, Lieutenant Governor's Secretariat Dr Tamilisai Soundarajan said on Monday. Rangasamy was tested at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College in Puducherry. He later travelled to Chennai for treatment. LG Soundararajan inquired about his health and wished him a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, the Governor also tested Covid-19 positive on Monday despite having no symptoms and being vaccinated against Covid-19.

According to Puducherry's medical journal, Union Territory reported 1,266 new cases of coronavirus, raising the total number to 72,975 by Monday. Puducherry and its suburbs outside Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam recorded the deaths of 23 people within the last 24 hours.

Puducherry alone recorded 1,080 of the 1,266 new cases while Karaikal contracted 92 new cases. The Yanam and Mahe districts had 79 and 15 new cases respectively. To date, 1,108 patients have been discharged in the last 24 hours. The mortality and recovery rates are 1.35 percent and 79.23 percent respectively. 32,979 health workers and 19,488 senior staff members have been vaccinated to date.

The department also vaccinated 1,62,852 people who fall into the category of older persons (those over the age of 60) or those over the age of 45 with co-morbidity. As of May 10, there are 14,169 active cases (2,078 hospitals and 12,091 remaining isolated at home). 57,818 patients have recovered and have been discharged. As the union field registers an increase in the number of coronavirus cases, management has announced a two-week lockdown from Monday (May 10) to May 24. Only essential services will be allowed.
