Punjab CM rejects APS Deol’s resignation

Reacting to State Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sindhu’s attacks the state Advocate-General gives his resignation


APS Deol’s resignation as state Advocate-General was rejected by the Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. As a result of constant attacks from the State Congress chief Navjot Singh Sindhu who wanted Deol removed for representing two accused cops in sacrilege and police firing. Deol handed over his resignation letter to Chief Minister on Monday.

As per reports, “Mr Sindhu’s speech attacking the state government is said to be the reason” behind such a reaction. While urging people to vote only on the agenda of Punjab’s welfare the cricketer-turned-politician, Navjot Sindhu said “They (politicians) offer lollipops …this is free, that is free, which happened in the last two months (ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls slated to be held early next year)”.

In September, Mr Deol was appointed to the post after Atul Nanda resigned as the Advocate-General after a hasty exit of Amarinder Singh as the Punjab chief minister said a senior advocate of Punjab and Haryana High Court. Mr Deol’s appointment didn’t go down very well and it triggered multiple debates within the party. He had also represented former top cop Sumedh Singh Saini and Inspector General Paramraj Singh Umaranangal in relation to cases connected to sacrilege and subsequent police firing in Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan in 2015.

On Monday, Navjot Sindhu’s wife welcomed Mr Deol’s decision to quit his post. According to reports Navjot Kaur Sindhu said “…. Attorney (APS Deol) had appeared for (former DGP Sumedh Singh) Saini. He (who represented the accused in the 2015 sacrilege case) can’t represent us. Attorney General had to be changed.”
