Rajasthan govt to re-examine Marriage Amendment Bill 2021

Rajasthan govt to reconsider the Bill for registration of marriages which seems to encourage child marriages.

Last month the Rajasthan State Assembly had proposed a Bill, the Marriage Amendment Bill 2021, according to which registration of all marriages would be compulsory, including registration of marriages of minors by their parents or guardians. It has received flak from the opposition party BJP which said the bill would encourage child marriages. After being challenged by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and many protests by social activists the state government said it will ask the Governor to return the Bill.

However, the state government defended its decision calling it a misinterpretation. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said that the government is working towards complete eradication of child marriage in the state and will not make in any compromises regarding the same and hence has requested the state Governor Kalraj Mishra to look into the matter and to return the bill due to incorrect conviction over child marriages for it is a matter of prestige for them.
