One of the prestigious Khel Ratna awards, which is the highest sporting honour in the Nation and carries prize money of Rupees 25 lakh, has been renamed to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

On Friday (6th August) Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards will be called  Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.  He said the decision was taken "respecting the sentiments of citizens across the country." In a  tweet, the Prime Minister said," I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award! Jai Hind!"

Major  Dhyan Chand represented India in 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics, where he won medals all three times. He was one of the world's greatest hockey players. Meanwhile, India is glowing with medals in the Tokyo Olympics. Many eminent personalities are appreciating the win.
