A new plant was inaugurated at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Bengaluru today to double the production of India’s indigeneous fighter jet LAC Tejas. While addressing a gathering of HAL management and staffers Mr Singh said “We cannot remain dependent on other countries for the defences of our countries… You (HAL) have received a 48,000 cr rupees order from the armed forces. This is the biggest indigenous defence procurement, which will give new heights to Indian aerospace sector. It is a historical deal.”I

In an exclusive interaction with a prominent news channel, EP Jayadeva the General Manager of HAL’s LAC Tejas said “It will double the production of LAC Tejas to 16 aircrafts a year towards completing Air Force order of 83 jets.” By adding that the first focus will be given on supply of trainer jets he added further by saying that “It will take us five years to complete the order. But we have set a three year target. We are also setting up a facility for trainer (aircraft) assembly.”

The second line of production for LAC Tejas is spread over 35 acres of land and India’s aspiration to become self-reliant will get a boost from it in meeting its defence needs. Many public and private sector players will be included in the project and in the private sector it is estimated to create as much as 5000 job vacancies.
