Rohit Sharma Replaces Virat Kohli as India’s ODI Captain

Rohit Sharma to take over ODI captaincy from South Africa series starting next month

BCCI has named Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain of the Indian cricket team. He will take over from his predecessor Virat Kohli starting the three-ODI series against South Africa in January 2022.

“The All- India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr. Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI and T20I teams going forward,” the BCCI tweeted.

This announcement was made on the day the board announced India’s squad for the three-test series starting from December 26.

Hitman took over as India’s T20I skipper after the T20 World Cup, led in the recently concluded three T20I series against New Zealand, which the home team comfortably won by 3-0. Rohit has less than a year to prepare for the upcoming T-20 World Cup in Australia next year, which will be followed by the 50- over World Cup in India in 2023. The Hitman has led India in 10 ODIs, out of which the team has won eight. India has also won the Asia Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, which is his biggest achievement till now.

Kohli took over as India’s full-time captain in 2017 when MS Dhoni decided to step down. King Kohli led India in 95 games- winning 65 and losing 27 matches with a win percentage of 70.43, and is fourth on the list of most matches as India’s skipper behind MS Dhoni, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Sourav Ganguly.

Under his captaincy, India fared well in two major ICC events. In 2017, India reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy, where they lost to their arch-rivals Pakistan. Two years later India reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup. But unfortunately, Kohli’s captaincy tenure ends without an ICC trophy.
