Russia defeated Croatia to win the Davis cup after 15 years

It is Russia’s third Davis Cup title and the first since 2006

The wait is finally over for the citizens of Russia as they have lifted the Davis Cup (tennis) title after 15 years.

Daniil Medvedev beat Marin Cilic 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the second singles match to give Russia a 2-0 lead over Croatia in the final. It is Russia’s third Davis Cup title, and first since 2006.

Andre Rublev earlier had beaten Borna Gojo in straight sets to put the Russians ahead at the Madrid Arena. Russia’s other Davis cup title was in the year 2002.

Croatia was also aiming to clinch the third title, but didn't get a chance to turn their No.1 ranked doubles team Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic after a clean sweep in the singles.

They had earlier won the title in 2005 and 2018. Russia completed the sweep of the team events after the women’s team won the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Prague last month. The last to do the same was the Czech Republic in 2012.

After a tight first set, Medvedev broke serve twice in the second against the 30th ranked Cilic to comfortably clinch the fifth consecutive victory at this year’s Davis Cup.

“It feels amazing,” Medvedev said. “But I’m happier for the team than for myself. We have an amazing team, amazing atmosphere. I’m happy to be a part of it and bring the points we need.

“Pretty amazing two weeks”, Medvedev said. “It’s never easy to come here at the end of the season, but they were some of the best weeks of my career.
