Sania Mirza Announces Her Retirement, Says 2022 Will Be Her Last Season

Mirza has won 6 Grand Slam titles so far in her career

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza announced her retirement plans. Seconds after she announced her decision, Sania occupied the top spot on the trends list on Twitter.

The news comes after her defeat in the first round of women’s doubles at the Australian Open 2022.

Sania said 2022 is going to be her last season on the tour. After she announced her decision, social media users reacted on Twitter and posted their thoughts and opinions.

Fans flooded social media with heartfelt tweets for the ace tennis player. Twitter users thanked her for the glorious years.

“Thank you Sania Mirza for all the lovely memories that you gave to us in tennis #SaniaMirza (sic),” a user wrote.

"There's a bunch of reasons for it. It's not as simple as 'okay I'm not going to play. I do feel my recovery is taking longer, I do feel, considering my son is three years old, I'm putting him at risk by travelling so much with him, that's something I have to take into account," Sania Mirza said at the post-match press conference.

"My body is wearing down. My knee was hurting today and I'm not saying that's the reason we lost but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I'm getting older," she added.

Sania has been playing tennis since 2001 and she turned professional in 2003. She is also former No.1 in doubles and has won six Grand Slam titles in her career.

Mirza also reached the highest of world No.30 27 in mid-2007, which made her the highest-ranked female player ever from India.

Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor also praised Sania Mirza.

Ranveer posted a picture of Sania on his Instagram story in which she can be seen proudly holding the Indian flag. Along with the picture, he wrote, “Queen @mirzasaniar,” and added a crown emoticon.

Arjun Kapoor also took to his Instagram story and wrote, “Really an inspiration to many @mirzasaniar.”
