SC issues notice to UP govt for allowing Kanwar Yatra from July 25

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government on Tuesday cancelled the Kanwar Yatra due to Covid-19


The Supreme Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognizance of a report of The Indian Express that the Uttar Pradesh government has allowed Kanwar Yatra from July 25 amid concerns of triggering third wave of Covid-19 and issued notice to the government. A two-judge bench of Justice R F Nariman and Justice B R Gavai issued a notice to the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government and directed to file early response regarding the matter. The next hearing will take place on Friday. Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government on Tuesday cancelled the Kanwar Yatra due to Covid-19. UP Additional Director General (ADG) Law and Order, Prashant Kumar said that the yatra in the state will be held from July 25 to August 6, reported The Indian Express. The SC mentioned that this is happening when the PM himself said that we cannot compromise one bit. The Supreme Court directed the Home Secretary, Union of India to respond to the news report.
