South Korea Recorded 6 Lakh New Infections In Last 24 Hours

The highest daily spike witnessed since January!


South Korea continues to see massive rise in Covid-19 cases amid a wave of Omicron infections. 

 

On Thursday, Hitting yet another milestone, South Korea recorded over 6,00,000 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily spike the country has witnessed till date.

 

On Thursday, The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said that the South Korea reported a record 6, 21,328 new daily Covid-19 cases, and a daily record 429 deaths. The latest tally marks a 55 per cent surge in only one day.

 

With new infections, South Korea's overall caseload has mounted to 8,250,592, the KDCA informed.

 

Daily infections are far higher than health authorities predicted last time. Most of these cases were said to be locally transmitted.

 

According to the reports, South Korea had its deadliest day of the pandemic on Tuesday with 293 deaths reported in 24 hours.

 

Less than a month ago, it had predicted the peak of the wave would come in mid-March at 140,000-270,000 daily cases.

 

Despite the numbers, the government shows no sign of rethinking plans to remove almost all social distancing restrictions in coming days and weeks, and public opinion appears to support those moves.

 

It has pushed back a curfew on eateries to 11 p.m., stopped enforcing vaccine passes, and plans to drop a quarantine for vaccinated travelers arriving from a across the globe.

 

A decision on whether to ease further measures, such as a current six-person limit on private gatherings, is expected as till Friday.

 

South Korea also mandates masks in all public indoor and outdoor spaces too.
