Student Life in Stress : Covid-19

Mental Health Of Students Amidst The Lock-down

As officials across the nation decide how best to open schools, one aspect too often overlooked is students’ mental health. Being parents of your children, parents should be aware of the pressures their wards are going through, as this helps them in healing and preparing them to learn and be active.

Research on the effect of the lock-down published in the June issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry concludes that young people experiencing loneliness may be as much as three times more likely to sink into depression in the future, but additionally that their mental health could be impacted for at least nine years because of it. Add the corona virus-induced feelings of isolation to that equation, and you begin to see how fragile our nation’s teens may be. Of course, parents play a vital role in their child's life wither to overcome depression or anxiety.

Some simple steps that can help youths through these trying times are :

• Meditate or try deep-breathing methods, which increase your body’s natural ability to relax during high-stress moments.

• Get moving.

• Prioritize sleep.

• Talk things out with someone you trust.

• Do or watch something that makes you laugh.

• Keep a non-judgmental journal to help process thoughts.

• Practice gratitude and positive self-talk.

It is very important to take care of each other and always check up on your friends and family. If you feel that someone has been acting different or has been less chirpy and happy then try to talk to them and try to help them by conversing with them. Together we can make it through this pandemic healthy, happy and secure.
