Supreme Court Re-Confirms Clean Chit To PM In Gujarat Riots

This case is considered as the biggest case so far against the PM!

Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the appeal made by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who had challenged a clean chit given by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to PM Modi.

The then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi and in fact several others in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

A bench headed by Justice A.M Khanwilkar and other Justices, Dinesh Maheswhwari and C T Ravikumar, was hearing Jafri’s appeal challenging October 5, 2017, order by Gujarat High Court which upheld the Ahmedabad Metropolitan Magistrate Court’s decision to accept the SIT’s closure report.

Therefore, giving a clean chit to CM Modi (2002-CM of Gujarat) and 63 others in riots-related cases.

Jafri was one of the 68 people killed at Gulberg Society, Ahmedabad.

The incident occurred a day after one of the coaches of the Sabarmati Express was burnt at Godhra, killing 59 people and triggering riots in the state in February 2002.

Under “no prosecutable evidence” Modi and other senior government officials were given a clean chit.

According to the Zakia’s 2018 plea, she challenged the 2017 order in the Supreme Court under the protest petition.

According to the plea, this highlighted the emphasis on the “substantiated merits”.

She sought this fresh investigation alleging a larger conspiracy involving several politicians and the police as well. Her plea had also said that Gujarat high court “failed to appreciate” the petitioner’s complaint.

As it was independent of the Gunbarrel Society case registered in the Meghaninagar Police Station. This remained one of the biggest cases so far against the PM.

However, Supreme Court re-confirmed the same yet again on Friday.
