Cong. leader Rahul Gandhi urges the party to help Chennai


New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his deep concern over the continuous rainfall on the streets of Chennai on Thursday. He also encouraged the party to give full support to the relief and rescue team.

In a tweet, Mr Rahul wrote, "The incessant rains in Chennai have become a cause for worry. Requesting our brothers and sisters in the state to follow all safety measures. And an appeal to Congress workers - please help in relief and rescue work. Take care, Chennai."

According to the reports, thunderstorms with heavy rains are likely to be witnessed in parts of the state. Light to moderate rain is expected. Schools and colleges remain closed on Friday.

Earlier, Red-alert has imposed by the India Meteorological  Department (IMD) has now been withdrawn.

It's been 11 days since the heavy clouds are shrouded in the state of Tamil Nadu. Chennai city bore the brunt of the depression, with the rains flooding roads and neighbourhoods, disrupting power supply to more than 65,000 houses, delaying rail operations, and halting flight arrivals for about six hours Thursday. The death toll reached 14.

 per the officials, the Tamil Nadu Govt. has set up 434 'siren towers' to alert authorities to floods and other emergencies. Also, the State Govt. is working with the mobile telecoms service to maintain the connectivity of the mobile networks. Almost 50 cellular phone towers (on wheels) are ready for use.

Almost 46 boats and JCBs or earthmovers, over 500 giant motor pumps are deployed to rescue people or the needy in Chennai.

On Tuesday, CM MK Stalin visited the rain-affected areas of the city and distributed health and food aid.
