Tamil Nadu: 3 dead, 2 injured in firecracker factory explosion

Amongst the dead were two women and a five-year-old boy whereas the two men who were injured are being treated at the hospital.


An explosion in a firecracker factory that occurred in Thaiyilpatti near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Monday morning left at least 3 dead and 2 injured. Amongst the dead were two women and a five-year-old boy whereas the two men who were injured are being treated at the Sivakasi government hospital. One of the injured is in a critical condition who has suffered more than 70% burn injuries, reported Hindustan Times. The explosion occurred around 8:30 am and soon the firefighters were rushed to the spot. Sivakasi is the hub of manufacturing crackers in Tamil Nadu. Before the 2018 ruling of the Supreme Court on pollution, the firecracker manufacturing units employed thousands of workers. Following the order, several manufacturing units switched to "green crackers" after receiving training and assistance from the government, reported NDTV.
