Tamil Nadu extends lockdown till March 31

The state government has directed district administration to enforce all rules and regulations strictly in the state to curb the pandemic.


Tamil Nadu government on Sunday increased the time period of lockdown in the state from February 28, 2021 to March 31, 2021 amid a sudden surge in the number of Covid cases. The state government said in its new order that the lockdown will be extended in order to curb the spread of COVID-19. The government also instructed district administration to enforce all rules and regulations strictly in the state and also allowed to apply Section 144 if needed. 

The order also stated that there should be "strict adherence to the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs)." These include movement of passenger trains; air travel; metro trains; schools; higher educational institutions; hotels and restaurants; shopping malls, multiplexes and entertainment parks; yoga centres and gymnasiums etc. "These SOPs shall be strictly enforced by the district authorities concerned, who shall be responsible for their strict observance," it added.

According to the order, all necessary measures need to be taken by the district administration to contain the virus including wearing of face masks, hand hygiene, social distancing and demarcating containment zones. Offices and workplaces have been directed to follow staggering work hours. The state assembly elections are also about to be held in a single phase on April 6.
