Tamil Nadu: First state to administer Covid-19 vaccines to children between 2-18 years

Tamil Nadu was the first state to vaccinate more than 500,000 pregnant women, said Health Minister.


Tamil Nadu will become the first state in the country to administer Covid-19 vaccines to children aged 2-18 years. As soon as Tamil Nadu gets the nod from the Centre regarding the inoculation of the vaccine, the state will leap into action said State Health Minister M Subramaniam on Wednesday.

An expert panel of the Central drug authority has recommended granting emergency use authorization to Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for children 2-18 years of age with certain conditions. Once approved by the Drugs Controller General of India they can start vaccinating the children.

Tamil Nadu was the first state to inoculate pregnant women when the Centre said they were eligible for vaccinations. More than 500,000 pregnant were vaccinated. Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV- D which was given approval to be administered among those aged 12 and above is yet to be included in the country’s immunization drive.

The Health Minister in his statement applauded the Coimbatore district for immunizing 93% of its population with at least one dose and 37% of the population with both doses. He further added five mobile vans were launched in five zones of the city to provided door-to-door service. On Sunday, the fifth mega vaccination camp was conducted by the state to boost the vaccination rate.
