The Flying Sikh: Milkha Singh passes away at 91 due to Covid-19 complications

One of the best performances of "The Flying Sikh" was when he finished fourth in the 400m finals of the Rome Olympics held in 1960.


Milkha Singh also famously known as "The Flying Sikh," breathed his last on Friday, just five days after his wife, Nimral Kaur died due to Covid-19 complications at a private hospital in Mohali at the age of 85. The legendary sprinter, 91, too succumbed to Covid-19 related complications at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) hospital. The Asian Games gold-medallist had contracted Covid-19 on May 19 and was in home isolation. Later on May 24, he was admitted to the ICU of Fortis hospital in Mohali due to "COVID pneumonia". He was then moved to the PGIMER hospital in Chandigarh on June 3. "It is with extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away at 11.30 pm. on the 18th of June 2021," his family said in a statement. Milkha Singh won four Asian gold medals and he is the only athlete who won gold in 400 metres race at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. The Padma Shri awardee will be cremated with state honours at 5 pm on Saturday in Chandigarh.
