Tokyo Olympics: Indian shuttler P V Sindhu advances to pre-quarterfinals

The World No. 7 will next compete against World No. 12 Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark.


Indian shuttler P V Sindhu beat world no. 34 Ngan Yi Cheung of Hong Kong and entered into the pre-quarterfinals of women's singles badminton event at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. Reigning world champion Ms Sindhu, who had clinched a silver medal in the Rio Olympics, won in straight games 21-9, 21-16 in a 35-minute Group J match and topped the group.

The World No. 7 will next compete against World No. 12 Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark, who topped Group I. The 26-year-old who hails from Hyderabad, has a 4-1 record against Mia. Ms Blichfeldt won only once against Ms Sindhu at the Yonex Thailand Open earlier this year.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Indian duo Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy failed to qualify for the quarterfinals in men's doubles badminton event at the Tokyo Olympics despite winning two matches in their group.
