Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu advances to quarterfinals in women's singles badminton event

Reigning world champion P V Sindhu stormed into the quarterfinals in the women's singles badminton event at Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. The Indian shuttler won a straight game 21-15, 21-13 against Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark, who seeded 13th, in a 41-minute match. The Rio Olympics silver medallist will next face Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals.

In the first match, Blichfeldt had her moments but Sindhu managed to remain a step ahead of her opponent. In the second match, Sindhu started with a 5-0 lead. Blichfeldt tried to turn the game around but once Sindhu secured a 16-11 lead, Mia did not resist and eventually gave up. On Wednesday, Sindhu had won pre-quarterfinals by defeating world no. 34 Ngan Yi Cheung of Hong Kong and topped group J.
