Tottenham Hotspur’s 8 Players and 5 staff members tested positive for COVID-19

Europa Conference League: Tottenham’s home game against Rennes called off!

Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa Conference League home game against Rennes has been called off due to Coronavirus cases in the Spurs squad, the Premier League club said in a statement.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said the eight players and 5 members of the staff had tested positive for Coronavirus and he expected more confirmed confirm cases.

“Every day we are having people with COVID, people who were not positive yesterday. This is not a good situation.”

Conte was supposed to be joined by Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the pre-match conference but instead faced the media on his own. Conte became Spurs boss last month.

Conte said that “We can confirm that our UEFA match against Stade Rennes will not take place. Discussions are ongoing with UEFA and we shall provide a further update on this fixture in due course”

UEFA have also confirmed the cancellation of the match despite Renne's objections to the manner of the calling off of the game. UEFA are speaking to both the clubs in an attempt to reschedule the match.

Tottenham’s Premier League match at Brighton on Sunday is also expected to be postponed.

It is unclear whether other games will be affected, Spurs are scheduled to play, Leicester City on December 16 and Liverpool on December 19.

The coronavirus pandemic has largely forced football behind closed doors last season but full crowds have returned to English football even though Covid-19 infections levels remain high.

The Italian also added: “This for sure makes me upset because I am here to talk about the atmosphere that I want to see in the stadium. Instead, we are talking about the people that have Covid.”
