Uttarakhand: 5 Navy personnel go missing after an avalanche on Mt. Trishul

Five Navy personnel and a porter went missing early Friday morning when a massive avalanche hit them near the summit of Mount Trishul in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. The incident occurred at around 5 am when the expedition team had gone to scale one of Uttarakhand's highest and most difficult peaks.

Col. Amit Bisht, principal of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), based in Uttarkashi, has left for the site with two trainers to oversee the rescue operations. 10 of the 20-member naval expedition team from Mumbai along with a porter had left from camp 3 to scale the highest of the three peaks, that is, Trishul-1. However, they were hit by an avalanche after which the rescue team rescued five of the 10 Navy mountaineers.

Due to bad weather conditions, the rescue team had to stop the operation midway on Friday. The Navy said in a statement that the ground rescue team accompanied by Air Force, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) with the assistance of a helicopter are involved in the rescue operation.
