West Bengal: 2 week-lockdown from May 16; essentials allowed

According to the notification, the shops with the essential services will remain open between 7 am and 10 am.


The West Bengal government on Saturday announced a complete lockdown of two weeks starting from May 16. The government said that all offices, educational institutes and transport services will remain closed including Kolkata Metro. The order said that only essential and emergency services will be allowed during the lockdown.

According to the notification, the shops with the essential services will remain open between 7 am and 10 am. However, restrictions have been relaxed for sweetmeat vendors as they will remain functional between 10 am and 5 pm. Similarly, petrol pumps and banks will remain open. The timing of banks will be between 10 am and 2 pm.

As per the government order, the industries will remain closed while tea gardens will be allowed to function with 50 percent strength. All kinds of cultural and religious events and functions have been banned in the state during the lockdown. No outdoor congregations will be permitted between 9 pm and 5 am.
