West Bengal: Heavy rains leave 14 dead, 2.5 lakh displaced as water discharged from dams

The rescue operations had begun last week in Hooghly district, where rivers overflowed the banks and flooded villages.


At least 14 people died due to wall collapse or electrocution due to heavy rainfall in West Bengal. Nearly 2.5 lakh people were displaced in six districts of the state, where after incessant rainfall, water was discharged from Damodar Valley Corporation dams which flooded the streets and houses, according to a senior official. 

The official said that several areas in Hooghly, Howrah, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Paschim Medinipur, and South 24 Parganas districts are flooded with waist-deep water and people are struggling to meet their basic needs, reported The Economic Times. Under relief operations, the West Bengal government has set up shelter homes for the people who have been displaced, the official added.

The state government has sent over one lakh tarpaulin, 1,000 MT of rice, thousands of drinking water pouches and clean clothes to the shelter homes, he stated. The rescue operations had begun last week in Hooghly district, where rivers overflowed the banks and flooded villages.
