BAFTA Awards 2022 Pays Tribute To Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Ji’s Fans Emotional!


On Sunday, the 2022 British Academy Film Awards were held, March 13 at Royal Albert Hall in London. The 75th annual BAFTAS was hosted by Rebel Wilson.

In 2006, BAFTA established a new section called In Memory Of to acknowledge the stars who worked hard in the film, games and television industries who have passed away. This year, Lata Mangeshkar was also featured in this list. The legendary singer breathed her last on February 6.

BAFTA Awards 2022 paid a special tribute to Lata Mangeshkar. The Nightingale of India featured in the In Memory Of section of BAFTA which was complemented by a heartfelt obituary.

Lata Mangeshkar's obituary at the BAFTA 2022 website read, "An Indian playback singer, who recorded an estimated 25,000 songs for more than 1,000 Hindi films over a career spanning over 70 years.

Mangeshkar rarely appeared on screen, preferring instead to record the songs that other actors would later do lip sync.

She became the first Indian artist to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in 1974. Her film credits list is vast, but notable songs featured in Anamika (1973), Aasha (1980), Dil Se... (1998) and Rang De Basanti (2006). In 2001, she was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna."

Seeing BAFTA's special tribute to Lata Mangeshkar, fans have got emotional. A fan wrote, "Thank you @BAFTA for including #Latamangeshkar in your In Memoriam section.

As anyone who follows the Indian film industries would know, her loss is irreplaceable (sic)." Another tweeted, "@BAFTA pays respect to our legendary singer @mangeshkarlata #LataMangeshkar #BAFTA (sic)."

Lata Mangeshkar had tested positive for Covid-19 and was hospitalised on January 8. She had mild symptoms then. However, her health condition worsened and she was put on a ventilator. Though she showed signs of improvement, her health deteriorated again on February 5. On February 6, she bid everyone goodbye.
