Content On OTT To Be Regulated Soon: Government

Government will soon start to regulate the content on various OTT platforms

Prakash Javadekar the minister at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Sunday said that the government will soon release its guidelines to regulate the content over various Over The Top (OTT) platforms because it had received a number of complaints against some series available at these platforms.

The Union Minister Javadekar said “We have received a lot of complaints against some series available on the OTT platforms. Films and serials released on OTT platforms and digital newspapers do not come under purview of Press Council Act, Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act or Censor Board. We will come up with some guidelines on it soon.”

The government brought the OTT platform under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ambit in November last year. These platforms previously would come under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. In the past week the web series ‘Tandav’ a video on Amazon Prime had received a lot of criticism with FIR’s being filed in multiple states. The ministry also receives complaints on ‘Tandav’ for its depiction of Hindu Gods in the show and for hurting religious sentiments of the people. Following the controversy came the announcement of the Ministry.
