Court to hear Bharti and Harsh bail pleas

Renowned Comedian Bharti Singh and her husband and writer Harsh Limbachiya's house and production house were raided on Saturday morning by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), to investigate the illegal consumption of drugs by the couple. The NCB procured 86.5 gms of ganja from the couple's residence, accusing them of unlawful intake and distribution of drugs. Soon after the unexpected discovery, the couple was taken for interrogation regarding the extent of their involvement in drug peddling, distribution and procurement.

Bharti Singh admitted to consumption of ganja and later Harsh also revealed the truth. The couple was then taken under judicial custody till 4 December, adhering to provisions of NDPS act in regard to alleged possession and consumption, a day before the court holiday. Bharti Singh had been sent to Kalyan Jail while Harsh was sent to Taloja Jail.

The magistrate court sent the couple a notice to serve the detention until further investigation. The court will hear their bail pleas today. The special public prosecutor added, "As I am occupied with other cases, so we will request for another date of hearing."

The duration of sentence and amount of fine varies with offence. It often depends on the amount of drug procured, briefly categorised as small quantity, more than small but less than commercial (large) and commercial quantity. These quantities are defined for each drug to figure the sentence limit. According to reports, upto 1 kg of ganja is small, above that is intermediate while above 20 kg is identified as commercial quantity. The amount confiscated from the couple's residence is small, so the sentence could range upto 1 year or a fine or both, depending upon the evidence in court.
