Poet and Sahitya Akademi Winner Farooq Nazki Dies

Renowned Poet Farooq Nazki Passes Away at 83


On Tuesday, Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki, an 83-year-old veteran broadcaster, poet, and Sahitya Akademi winner, passed away at a hospital in Katra.

 

Nazki had been unwell for several years and had relocated to live with his son in Jammu. On Monday night, he experienced a heart attack. His body is being transported from Jammu to Srinagar and will be laid to rest at the Malkha graveyard on Wednesday.

 

Nazki held significant positions at All India Radio Kashmir and Doordarshan. In 1995, he received the Sahitya Akademi award in Kashmiri for his poetry collection "Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas" (Fire in the Eyelashes). Additionally, he served as the media advisor to two chief ministers, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.

 

Condolences have poured in from various quarters following the passing of the veteran journalist.

 

Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed deep sadness over the passing of the living legend Farooq Nazki Sahib. He highlighted Nazki's unparalleled literary brilliance and media presence, emphasizing his lasting impact on broadcasting and literature. Azad offered prayers for Nazki's peace and extended condolences to his family.

 

All India Radio tweeted about the passing of Farooq Nazki, noting his roles as the former Station Director of Akashvani and Doordarshan Srinagar, Sahitya Akademi Awardee, prominent poet, and broadcaster. They mentioned that he passed away yesterday after a prolonged illness.
