Ram Gopal Verma talks about Shahid Kapoor's Jersey Disastrous Fate

Remake of a national - award - winning Telugu film Nani

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Verma call Jersey's disastrous. Jersey is a 2022 Indian Hindi - language sports drama film written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, being his Hindi directional debut and the remake of his 2019 Telugu film of the same title. It stars Shahid Kapoor as a former cricketer who returns to the game for his son's wish of a Jersey, alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor. The film was released on 22 April 2022.

Bollywood has been making remakes of South films from a long time. As per reports, currently, there are at least 15-20 South Indian Films which are in various stages of being remade in Hindi. It has been noticed that many of the last few south remakes have been outright rejected by the audiences. Ram Gopal Verma has spoken up about the same issue in the light of 'Jersey'.

In a series of tweets, he shared how 'Jersey', not doing well at the box office is a waste of time, efforts and money. Taking it to Twitter, he wrote, "The DISASTROUS fate of JERSEY film in Hindi signals the DEATH of REMAKES for the simple reason it has been proved multiple times that dubbed films like #Pushpa #RRR #KGF 2 are doing far better than originals if the content is good #Death Of Remakes"

He wrote further alongside a tag #Death of Remakes', "If Nani's original Jersey from Telugu was dubbed and released it would have costed the producers just 10 lakhs whereas the remake in Hindi costed 100 cr resulting in losing enormous money, time, effort, and face."

Verma added, "Bollywood will be now getting ducked from both front and back as they neither seem to know how to make superhits nor can they hope to survive on remaking South films because nobody will sell them REMAKE rights. Moral of the story is it's smart to release dubbed films instead of remaking them because it's obvious that the audiences are ok with any face or any subject from anywhere as long as it interests them."

Calling remakes’ COVID viruses, Ram Gopal Verma concluded, "Telugu and Kannada films have infected Hindi films like a COVID VIRUS. Hoping that BOLLYWOOD will soon come with a VACCINE."

In recent weeks, several actors have said that Bollywood is struggling to keep up with the South Indian Film industries because of a lack of authenticity, and because the Hindi film industry has distanced itself from hero - driven star vehicles that we so popular in the 80s and 90s.

Jersey earned just Rs 14 crore in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, KGF 2 is well on its way to earn Rs 900 crore in its worldwide collection.
